New Name, Same Heart

For 44 years we were known as the Assistance League of Bellingham, and we belonged to a network of similar organizations across the country.

We recently became an independent nonprofit so we could direct all our focus and funds toward local people and programs. We changed our name, but our programs, people and commitment to the people of Whatcom County remain the same.

Our Thrift & Gift Shop is still the nicest thrift store in town.

And we’re more determined than ever to enable small acts of kindness that make a big difference in someone else’s life.

Why Change Our Name?

When we became independent from the national Assistance League organization, we could no longer use trademarked names such as Assistance League and Operation School Bell (now called Whatcom School Partners). While the change was necessary, it also became an exciting opportunity to choose a name and identity that better reflect who we are and the spirit of our work.

We’ve always been a group driven by action — neighbors helping neighbors, volunteers stepping up, and community members making a direct impact right here in Whatcom County. Action League of Bellingham captures that energy, purpose, and momentum. It reflects our belief that when people come together in service, extraordinary things happen.

And honestly? It make us feel a little like superheroes — ordinary people creating meaningful change together every day.

What Does Our Logo Mean?

Our new logo reflects the interconnected cycle of community support that defines Action League of Bellingham. The two flowing arrows symbolize how generosity moves through our community — donations become thrifted treasures, thrift sales fund local programs, and those resources are reinvested directly into serving the people of Whatcom County.

The circular motion also reflects sustainability and renewal, keeping useful items in the hands of others rather than in landfills.

Subtly woven into the design is a heart shape, representing the compassion, connection, and love that inspire our volunteers, our mission, and our commitment to one another and our community.
